Prairie Giants, Up Close
The Lake Audy bison enclosure in Riding Mountain National Park is truly a wild adventure, we got so close to these magnificent animals we could smell them—that wild, earthy scent I'll never forget. It's incredible to think these creatures nearly vanished completely from the prairie, reduced to scattered bones across the landscape. The approximately 40 bison roaming this enclosure today are descendants of just 10 animals brought from Elk Island in the 1940s, after the original herd from 1931 had to be destroyed due to disease. Standing there watching them move freely across their native prairie felt like witnessing history being set right—a reminder of what we almost lost and what we're fighting to protect. Remembering our history, protecting our future.
